제목 Uniform homeotropic LC alignment on hydrophilic ITO electrode
초록 We proposed a novel methodology for vertical alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) using self-assembled molecular layer of 4-(4-alkylphenyl)benzoic acid on the hydrophilic indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. Proposed method provides a simple alignment process involving doping of alignment agent in LCs. The hydroxyl group which can be hydrogen-bonded with carboxyl group of 4-(4-alkylphenyl)benzoic acid is generated by UV exposure on ITO surface. Thus, hydrogen-bonded alignment agent induces the vertical alignment of LCs. We investigated the vertical alignment characteristics of LCs according to the UV exposure time. The LC device prepared by our method appears uniform vertical alignment under the cross-polarizers. The effect of UV exposure time on the LC device performance has been investigated.
