Amphiphilic block copolymers have the ability to build self-assembled structures. Here, we studied a new blend system made by amphiphilic block copolymer and homopolymer for membrane application. Amphiphilic diblock copolymer which is comprised of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) and hydrophobic polyethylene(PE) was used to blend with a poly(acrylic acid)(PAA). The blends were applied on atop of alumina membrane as the active layers. This layers were prepared by layer-by-layer deposition which is the alternating dipping of the alumina substrate into the dilute polymer solutions. Due to the very different preference in solvents, we had to use mixed solvent system in this process. The deposited layers created nanostructure induced by annealing, and led by the selective removal of PAA, nano-porous structure was created. The filtration ability of the nanoporous blends was tested. Advantageously, the active layers exhibited anti-fouling effect compared to the bare alumina membrane. |
