Surface-induced phase transition behaviors of rod-disc molecule |

Surface-induced phase transition behaviors of a rod-disc (cyanobiphenyl-triphenyl) liquid crystalline (LC) molecule (RD12) were investigated by changing the surface chemistry and the physical interactions. Upon varying the thickness of the LC cells and their surface chemical and physical conditions, the RD12 phase transition behavior was dramatically changed. The nematic (N) phase of RD12 in the LC cell with a low cell gap and polyimide (PI) rubbed surface could be preserved and the crystallization of RD12 was completely suppressed. Based on the systematic experimental observations, it was concluded that the glassy N phase was formed due to the fact that the surface anchoring force is bigger than the crystallization force.
