Alkaline polymer electrolytes not only contain higher chemical, thermal stability, and mechanical strength for maintaining durability but also solve accumulation issue of carbonate salts for the liquid electrolyte in Alkaline water electrolysis(AWE). The ammonium pendant groups with cyclic structure endure Hofmann elimination reaction compared with conventional quaternary ammonium(QA) in basic condition. In this work, we synthesized a Poly(arylene ether ketone) grafted the cyclic ammonium(CA) groups containing basic stability for application in Anion exchange membranes(AEMs). Ion exchange capacity(IEC) of the polymer electrolyte is increased with the degree of amine substitution and change of IEC shows different mechanical properties (tensile strength and strain) of membranes. Some CA membranes showed higher water uptake and anion conductivity than quaternary ammonium in spite of lower IEC due to additional hydrogen bonding. Polymer electrolytes were compared IEC changes testing chemical stability in basic solution for 4 weeks and CA membranes showed slower degradation rate than QA membrane. |
