Ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) that can selectively transport cations and anions are being used in various desalting and energy conversion processes. The performance of electro-membrane processes using such IEMs largely depends on the separation characteristics of the membranes. In addition to the basic separation of cations and anions, the IEMs need to block the transport of specific ions. For example, in many cases, an anion-exchange membrane with reduced proton leakage is required. In addition, in the case of a cation-exchange membrane, selective permeation characteristics for monovalent ions are required. In this study, monopolar membranes with blocking properties for specific ions were prepared. In order to impart blocking properties to specific ions, the hydrophilicity, crosslinking density, basicity and acidity, and magnitude of the electrostatic repulsion force of the membrane surface were appropriately adjusted. The prepared monopolar membranes were applied to water-splitting electrodialysis and acid-base flow battery to evaluate their performance.
