Synthesis of Ag-Ag2S Hetero Nanostructures and Their Application for Dye Photodegradation |

Photocatalytic application has mostly used a semiconductor that can utilize the energy from the sun. However, the conventional semiconductor absorbs the UV region from the full solar spectrum. Therefore, the development of hybrid metal-semiconductor nanoparticles is increasing in interest. The noble metal portion in hybrid nanoparticles can make use of the visible and UV regions by its synergistic properties between the metal and the semiconductor, and thus the nanoparticles can improve the photocatalytic activity. In this study, metal-semiconductor (Ag-Ag2S) hybrid nanostructures were obtained by site-selective sulfidation of hexagonal Ag nanoplates. Because of the anisotropic structure of hexagonal nanoplates, the Ag2S selectively formed on the corners and edges of the nanoplates, producing a new heterostructure in which both Ag and Ag2S portions are exposed to the environment. The nanoparticles showed excellent activity and recyclability in the photodegradation of methylene blue. |
