Anodizing is an electrochemical process used to form thicker oxide films than the native oxide layer on valve metals, such as aluminium, magnesium, titanium etc.. The oxide films formed by anodizing can have various forms of dense barrier type, porous type with regular or irregular pores or nanotube type, depending on the metals and anodizing solutions. The anodic oxide films can have excellent corrosion and wear resistances, and provide good adhesion for paint primers and glues. Anodizing is also used to make dielectric films for electrolytic capacitors and bioactive surface oxide films for implants. In this presentation, anodizing processes of typical valve metals of Al, Mg and Ti, and properties of the anodized surfaces will be introduced and discussed in view of their industrial applications. |
