PLGA has been widely used as biomaterials in the pharmaceutical and medical applications. However the decomposition products of the PLGA are known to decrease the pH of surrounding tissue, thus causing inflammatory reaction. Moreover, it is required to improve mechanical and biological property of the materials to use it for load-bearing bone implant application. The Mg(OH)2 has an acid-neutralizing effect and the β-TCP has biodegradability and excellent osteoconductivity. Here, we developed the PLGA/inorganic composite implants with improved mechanical and biological properties using Mg(OH)2 and β-TCP via a twin-extrusion processing. To characterize the composites, mechanical properties, cytotoxicity, osteo-differentiation ability, and anti-inflammatory activity were evaluated in this study. These results suggest that the incorporation of β-TCP and Mg(OH)2 additives into PLGA-based biomaterials would have great potential in orthopedic applications. |
