Drilling mud is the non-newtonian fluid used in drilling systems, which conducts transporting cuttings from reservoir, controlling formation pressure and maintaining well bore stability. Drilling mud, especially for water based drilling mud (WBM), is mainly composed of bentonite, barite and polymer. Bentonite contributes to the shear thinning of WBM, which is more as the bentonite gets smaller. We experimented ball milling of bentonite to increase the shear thinning behavior of the drilling mud. To increase the efficiency of ball milling, MoS2, a two-dimensional material, was added and the addition method was divided into simple addition and mixing in water. The particle size, crystallinity and rheological properties of bentonite were analyzed by FE-SEM, TEM, XRD and rheometer. Experimental results show that the shear thinning of WBM is increased when ball milling with the addition of MoS2. This confirms that the two-dimensional material can be used as an additive in the grinding process and contributes to further improving the performance of the drilling mud. |
