Even if the transformation of alcohols into aldehydes or ketones is of great importance in laboratories as well as industries, the heterogeneously catalyzed selective alcohol oxidation with wide substrate scopes at room temperature in air has never been reported so far. The easily prepared Ru(OH)x/MnO2 could act as a heterogeneous catalyst for liquid-phasic selective oxidation of alcohols at room temperature in the presence of air. A wide variety of substrates including aromatic, hetero-atomic, allylic, and aliphatic alcohols were converted to the desired products in excellent yield and selectivity using hexane as a cheap solvent without any additives such as bases. The separation between product and catalyst could be simply carried out by the filtration and reused for benzyl alcohol oxidation for at least 10 times with keeping its catalytic activity. |
