A binder pitch is important to manufacture a carbon block and a bulk graphite due to little binding ability. However, there is a lot of weight-loss during carbonization process. This results in low density of carbon block. In this paper, we prepared binder pitches from pyrolysis fuel oil with different β-resin content and with similar quinoline-insoluble content and softening point. Aromaticity of the binder pitches increased by increasing β-resin content from 0.78 to 0.81. To prepare the pitch/coke block, the binder pitches and commercial isotropic coke were mixed in a weight ratio of 2:8 at room temperature, and the mixture was compressed at 100MPa at 150℃ for 15min using cylinder shaped metal mold. Then, the carbon block was prepared from the pitch/coke block through carbonization at 1,000℃. Density of the carbon block increased up to 4.6% by increasing β-resin content. It is attributed that the β-resin content affect to increase the carbon block density during heating process |
