Epoxy resin is utilized extensively in worldwide as feedstock of chemicals. However, bisphenol A used as raw material of epoxy resin can affect to human beings as environmental hormone. Furthermore, it has great dependence on petroleum resources. Lignin is abundant biomass in earth and it involve the aromatic ring in chemical structure. Therefore, lignin can be utilized as substitute material of bisphenol A for production of bio-epoxy resin. In this study, purified methanol soluble lignin (MSL) is obtained through methanol washing process. MSL is reacted with epichlorohydrine through two step epoxidation. As a consequence, phenolic hydroxyl group in lignin is substituted to epoxide group, thus lignin-derived epoxy resin (LER) is synthesized. In addition, LER is synthesized through esterification using anhydride compound to bio-polyester (BPE). LER and BPE are analyzed using FT-IR, TGA, etc. to investigate thermal properties and molecular structure. |
