Due to our increasing concerns on climate change and other environmental problems, bio-based production of chemicals and materials from renewable non-food biomass has been attracting great attention. Since microorganisms isolated from nature are rather inefficient for producing desired chemicals and materials, metabolic engineering is employed for the enhanced production of natural bioproducts, production of non-natural products, broadening substrate utilization range, and other purposes. Over the last decade, metabolic engineering became more powerful by integrating systems biology and systems biology together with evolutionary engineering, which allowed metabolic engineering of a cell at systems-level; thus, systems metabolic engineering emerged. In this lecture, I will describe strategies and tools of systems metabolic engineering and accompanying examples on the bio-based production of various chemicals and materials from renewable resources |
