Structure of Block Copolymer Solutions in Oil |

In the transportation industry, block copolymers dispersed in oil have been employed as viscosity modifier or lubricant to improve fuel performance. Oil typically indicates organic molecules with higher molecular weight than so-called solvent. In this presentation, block copolymer solutions in oil has been investigated using scattering technique, providing a bridge between low molecular weight solvents and homopolymers in block copolymer blends. In particular, solvent distribution and chain conformation are discussed as a function of concentration and temperature. At low concentration block copolymer can self-assemble into micelles in oil blend, and the effects of solvent selectivity on the micelle structure is discussed. Particularly micelle dimension and intermicellar interaction are discussed. Overall these results bolster our understanding of how the properties of block copolymer solutions (or micelles) is influenced in oil solvent. |
