Blends of two petroleum residues, fluid catalytic cracking decant oil (FCC-DO) and pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO) were used for preparation of binder pitch. Characteristics of pitches prepared from blends were investigated, and the applicability as binder was confirmed by forming carbon articles. Both two residues were composed of various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PFO shows a broad boiling point distribution (100~720℃), while FCC-DO has a relatively narrow distribution (major 220~540℃). Difference in the composition of two residues affects properties of the pitches. Both softening point and carbon yield of the pitches increased with the content of PFO, but production yield decreased, inversely. Changes in these properties influenced the performance as the binder. FCC-DO contents in blends improved fluidity of the pitch, which is beneficial in forming the carbon article. However, its over-application reduced the properties of the carbon article after the carbonization step. |
