The mechanical property of the well-known elastomer PDMS has been characterized by the buckling and microtensile methods. The two methods have shown very good agreement in the values of Young’s moduli for PDMS elastomers having different mixing ratio between base resin and curing agent, except for 5:1 mixing ratio. For 5:1 PDMS, the buckling method has led to higher (~50%) value of modulus than that from microtensile test. Various analysis techniques, such as solvent swelling experiments, scanning electron microscop(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), atomic force microscopy(AFM), and JKR (Johnson-Kendall-Roberts) set-up, have been applied to find out the reason for the disagreement in moduli values from the buckling and microtensile methods. Detailed discussion on the importance of interfacial adhesion between sensor polystyrene (PS) film and PDMS substrates and, as a result, on the finite-width effect in the buckling method will be given. |
