We report a facile preparation method of hollow sphere mesoporous silicas (HSMS) through a simple oil in water emulsion system, which can control the geometries of HSMS using parameters related to the emulsion formation. The reactant mixture is composed of aqueous acidic solution as a water phase, silica source solution as an oil phase, and Pluronic® P123 as a templating agent. HSMSs were investigated depending on the amount of P123 and butanol in the reactant mixture. It was found that the geometries of HSMS were strongly depending on the composition of reactant mixture. When the molar ratio of butanol in the silica source solution increased, the overall particle size increased while the cavity size decreased. In addition, a change of the molarcomposition of P123 in the reactant mixture affected total particle size of HSMS. These results indicate that using the composition of butanol and P123 as synthetic parameters can control the hollow sphere mesoporous silica. |
