Lipid productivity is generally considered more important factor than lipid contents. In this study, two strains of marine microalgae, T. sp. MBEyh01L (KCTC12429BP) and N. oculata K-1281 (SCCAP) were compared for their performance. While in N. oculata, the lipid content was increased to 31% from 11% after 3 days of nitrogen starvation, the lipid contents was increased to 9.6% from 4.9% in T. sp. On the other hand, a drastic increase. In carbohydrate content from 16% to 48% was observed in T. sp. while that in the N. oculata was increased from 12% to 16% after 3 days of nitrogen starvation. Although the lipid content was about 3 times higher in N. oculata, the lipid productivity was 46% higher in T. sp. due to the greater biomass productivity. This study showed that biomass productivity is also important for achieving high lipid productivity. |
