Artificial graphite and carbon disc is mainly composed with cokes and binder pitch. However, the density of pitches/cokes carbon discs decrease due to large weight-loss during the pyrolysis of volatile compound in binder pitch. In this study, binder pitches were prepared from pyrolysis fuel oil with similar quinoline-insoluble content and softening point but different β-resin from 1.2% to 19.5%. The binder pitches and commercial isotropic cokes were mixed in weight ratio of 2.5: 7.5 at room temperature, and compression molded at 100 MPa at 170℃ for 20 min using cylinder shaped metal mold (20 ϕ*10 mm). Then that molded mixture was carbonized at 1000℃ for 1 h. The density of carbon disc increased 11.4% by increasing of β-resin. Therefore, β-resin of binder pitch affects densifying carbon disc. |
