제목 Life cycle assessment of carbon monoxide production: Electrochemical CO2 reduction vs. autothermal reforming
초록 Electrochemical CO2 reduction for CO production can contribute to combating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from major stationary emitters. To analyze its GHG reduction potential, we conduct a life cycle assessment of two processing routes for CO production: electrochemical CO2 reduction and autothermal reforming. We conduct process simulation using Aspen Plus in order to calculate inventory data and analyze their net carbon footprints, namely global warming impact (GWI). As a result, the electrochemical CO production shows less GWI than the autothermal reforming (ATR) case when electric energy with low carbon intensity is consumed by CO2 electrolysis. Also, the GHG reduction potential is highly dependent on how to deal with the multifunctionality of the ATR-based conventional CO production.
