Methane adsorption on highly porous anthracite-based activated carbon monoliths |

The activated carbon monoliths were made from activated anthracites by varying mass ratios activating agent/anthracite using binder of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt. The characteristics of activated carbon monoliths were assessed by nitrogen adsorption on a specific surface area analyzer. Elemental surface analyses were performed by X-ray photo-electronic spectroscopy (XPS) for the selected samples. Methane adsorption on highly porous anthracite-based activated carbon monoliths was studied at three different temperatures and at pressure up to 35 atm in a volumetric adsorption apparatus. The mass-basis methane adsorption results indicated the increase in methane adsorption capacities of carbon monoliths with increasing surface area, total pore volume and micropore volume. The maximum volumetric methane uptake of anthracite-based carbon monoliths was observed as 123 V/V at 293K and 35 atm. |
