Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was electropolymerized onto FTO glass as counter electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs). PEDOT is known to be a potential replacement for Pt when used as the catalytic layer on the counter electrode, and may also be used as the hole transport material in DSSCs. PEDOT counter electrodes were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Cyclic Voltammetry and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS). The extensive cyclic voltammograms showed PEDOT counter electrode with excellent electrocatalytic activity for I3- reduction. The EIS demonstrated that the good properties of PEDOT is due to their lower charge transfer resistance between counter electrode and electrolyte. From the enhanced photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 5.1% in DSSCs with PEDOT counter electrode, it can be considered as a promising alternative counter electrode for use in Pt-free DSSCs. |
