Layer by Layer (LbL) deposition method is a very versatile way to make a polymeric thin film by using electrostatic or hydrogen bonding attraction. By introducing additional chemical crosslinking reaction to the LbL film the film can be converted into one with more durability. In this research, copolymers of styrene and vinylbenzyl chloride were quaternized by the reaction with trimethylamine. The copolymer were also modified by incorporating azide (-N3) moiety for chemical crosslinking reaction. LbL method was used for the preparation of fuel cell film by using the azide modified cationic polystyrene copolymer (amPS) as a cationic polyelectrolyte and sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide) (sPPO) as an anionic polyelectrolyte. We used two types of Crosslink conditions, which are wet-crosslink and dry-crosslink. LbL film shows different result with crosslink conditions. Obtained film was characterized by SEM, H-NMR, IR, IEC, water uptake, proton conductivity, and methanol permeability. |
