Dual-Color-Emitting Carbon Nanodots for Theranostic Applications |

Carbon nanodot has been investigated as a new multifunctional nanoparticle for wide fields of applications. In this work, we demonstrate a dual color-emitting carbon nanodot (DC-CND) by introducing 4-octyloxyaniline. DC-CNDs transferred to aqueous solution using poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride showed high cell viability on normal and cancer cell lines. We have carried out in vitro cellular imaging of DC-CNDs, and DC-CNDs showed strong multicolor fluorescence signals changed by the excitation wavelength. Moreover, in vivo optical imaging visualized the biodistribution of intravenously injected DC-CNDs and it demonstrated its potency as an in vivo bioimaging agent. We also performed light-triggered activation of ion channel, channelrhodopsin-2, as a proof-of-concept study of optogenetics. Calcium imaging visualized elevation of calcium level after photoexcitation of DC-CNDs. DC-CNDs can be used for activation of two different ion channels depending on excitation wavelength. |
