Controlling the Permeability of Porous Semi-Permeable Membranes Based on a Binary Blend of Cellulose Triacetate and Chitosan |

A series of porous semi-permeable membranes based on the binary blends of cellulose triacetate (CTA) and chitosan (CS) were successfully produced to harvest microalgal biomass for biofuels. To obtain the maximum value of the permeability of the membranes, the nanometer-sized pores in the blend films were generated by silica nanoparticles which were introduced during the film processing of the blend films, and then effectively removed by being treated with the base solution. The permeability of the blends was measured as functions of the CS content and the relative amount of silica nanoparticles. The morphology and mechanical properties of the films were precisely characterized by various techniques. |
