Aromatic polyamides (PA) such as poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) and poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) have exhibited a number of useful properties such as high thermal stability, high chemical resistance, low flammability coupled with excellent mechanical properties because of chain stiffness and intermolecular hydrogen bonding of amide groups. However, one of the drawbacks to the employment of these aromatic PAs is the difficulty of processing due to their high processing temperature and limited solubility. Therefore, much effort has been made to modify the structure of PAs in order to have better properties in terms of both solubility and processability with protection of their high thermal stability. To improve the processability of PAs, we synthesized new PAs with trifluoromehtyl pendant groups. The synthesis and characterization of the PAs will be presented. |
