Defect free graphene is a perfect barrier material that does not allow any molecules to permeate. A variety of simulations and experiments demonstrate gas and ion barrier properties of graphene. Defective graphene can be also used for gas barrier applications with two strategies; the stacking of chemically converted graphene oxide (GO) and the incorporation of graphene based material into polymer nanocomposites. This study deals with the availability of graphene, GO and graphene/polymer nanocomposites for gas barrier applications in terms of preparation, theoretical and simulation demonstrates, and practical applications based on experimental results. Then, the state-of-the art of progress, and limitations of graphene-based gas barrier materials will be also discussed. An overview of potential applications of these graphene based materials and current challenges for gas barrier materials will be provided for the guide of future progress and perspectives. |
