This study was to evaluate the influence of ultrasonic degradation on variation of molecular weight of α-chitosan and β-chitosan by ultrasonic treatment. α-chitosan and β-chitosan with different degree of deacetylation and average molecular weights were used. Ultrasonic treatment of solutions was conducted at 100 W for 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 min with a sonicator. Ultrasonic degradation has been characterized by colloid titration method and gel permeation chromatography. Results show that the molecular weight of α-chitosan and β-chitosan in 5 v/v% acetic acid solution were decreased by ultrasonic treatment, and chitosan of high molecular weight was more easily degraded. The polydispersity decreased with ultrasonic treatment for all ultrasonicated chitosans. |
