Curcumin-eluting biliary stent for treatment of cholangiocarcinoma |

Curcumin is known to inhibit proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis of cancer. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is regarded to have an inappreciable effect and surgical removal of CCA is practically impossible. Palliative therapies such as biliary stenting and photodynamic therapy have been assessed as means of prolonging survival. we prepared curcumin-eluting stents for treatment of cholangiocarcinoma. Local treatment of curcumin by aid of polymer-coated metal stent can be considered as an effective approach for inhibition of proliferation, invasion, and migration of cholangiocarcinoma cells. At in vitro cell viability test using HuCC-T1 human cholangiocarcinoma cells, viability of HuCC-T1 cells was decreased dose-dependently with increasing dose of curcumin. Furthermore, curcumin-loaded stent showed higher antitumor activity at in vivo study using tumor-bearing mouse than curcumin itself. |
