Cationic dye assisted removal of azo dye from water by amic acid functionalized MCM-41 |

The adsorption properties of amic acid functionalized MCM-41 (SA-MCM-41) towards dyes such as rhodamine 6G (R6G), methylene blue (MB) and metanil yellow (MY) were studied. The amic acid functionalized MCM-41 was synthesised via a three step syntheses strategy, started from the preparation of MCM-41 through sol-gel technology. The MCM-41 was functionalized initially with propyl amine and further modified to amic acid by treatment with succinic anhydride in presence of equimolar triethylamine. SA-MCM-41 exhibited good adsorption capacities towards R6G and MB but poor tendency towards MY from individual dye solutions. The competitive adsorption from binary and ternary dye mixtures showed the SA-MCM-41 can remove MY completely in the presence of R6G due to the strong interaction as matter of contrary charge densities of both dyes. The adsorption behaviour of R6G and MY over SA-MCM-41 from binary and ternary mixtures clearly pointed out the possibility of layer by layer adsorption. |
