Isocyanides and their multi-component reactions that form multiple bonds in one pot have a long history in organic chemistry and have been used from academia to industry.1-2 Despite huge potential of the isocyanide chemistry, some lack of academic interest toward this field is yet eminent. This reluctance is undoubtedly related to the extremely distressing odour of isocyanides that has also made them to be used as potential non-lethal weapons. Herein, we have developed a remarkable serial process for in-situ generation, separation, and reaction of foul smelly isocyanides using an integrated microreactor system. Several isocyanides based multi-component reactions such as Passirini and Ugi reactions were successfully performed in the continuous microfluidic system. It is plausible that the developed microchemical process definitely solves the longstanding problem of foul isocyanide chemistry, further extends to on-site and on-demand production of toxic and harmful chemicals under enhanced safety. |
