The di- and triblock copolymers of PS-b-LCnP and LCnP-b-PS-b-LCnP (n= 3, 6, 11, LCnP = poly(n-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-oxy)(CH2)n acrylate)) were synthesized by using an ATRP method with low polydispersity indices (PDI < 1.2) and number-averaged molecular weights in the range of 10 to 40K. The optical properties and micellar structures in 5CB were studied using small angle neutron scattering with deutrated PS block, generalized indirect Fourier transform, and light scattering methods for a model-study on self-assembled liquid crystalline gels. The profound differences in the micellar structures and optical properties in 5CB were found depending on the compositions and molecular weights of block copolymers. The sharp structural change of the micelle in 5CB was found at TNI and caused the opaque-to-transparent change in the short time by heating the sample. This optical property can be applied to the smart window and liquid crystalline display technologies. |
