Elucidation of inherent lithium storage mechanism on MoS2 via Synchrotron-based X-ray analysis |

Numerous studies have been conducted on a MoS2 material owing to its high capacity and good rate capability as a promising substitute for commercial graphite materials in lithium-ion batteries. However, the mechanism of the reversible lithium ion storage in MoS2 remain still unclear. Herein, we carried out an in-depth study about the lithium storage behavior of MoS2. The conversion reaction was verified by monitoring the reversible formation of MoS2 phase through the X-ray absorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Moreover, reversible Li-S like reactions were demonstrated by investigating the sulfur redox reaction through the voltage profile comparison and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy deconvolution. The results of systematic approach to the reaction mechanism present clear evidence that both the Li-S like reaction and the conversion reaction contribute to the initial obtained capacities. |
