For understanding the relationships between chemical structures, molecular packing structure, and its photophysical properties of soft matter, a butterfly-shaped diphenylpyrimidine molecule (abbreviated as DP6C) was newly synthesized. From the combined the techniques of scattering, spectroscopic and microscopic experiments, it was realized that the peculiar phase transition behaviors of DP6C were originated from the non-planarity of the aromatic mesogen. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the photophysical properties of DP6C can be tuned by controlling the molecular packing structures with simple thermal treatments in the hierarchy level.
