During thermo-oxidative stabilization reaction, the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursors are converted into infusible and nonflammable ladder type structures for further carbonization. The heterocyclic structures are resulted from the complex stabilization reactions including cyclization reaction, dehydrogenation reaction and direct oxidation reactions. Although efforts have been done to study the stabilization reactions, some specific features of thermo-chemical reactions leading to the formation of the carbon structure are still poorly understood. One of the challenges is the separation and evaluation of oxidation reactions from other stabilization reactions. This study aims at investigating the structural evolution of oxygen-containing functional groups and quantitatively evaluating the extent of oxidation reactions, in order to clarify the effect of oxygen from comonomer or air on the structures of the stabilized poly(acrylonitrile-co-itaconic acid). |
