Effective astaxanthin extraction from Haematococcus pluvialis as a major source of natural astaxanthin is difficult due to the thick cell wall of mature red cyst. Herein, the cyst germination processing using nitrogen and light was developed for an efficient astaxanthin extraction from H. pluvialis cells cultured in outdoor condition. By applying cyst germination using 1 mM KNO3-150 μE/m2/s, energy efficiency for extraction process was extremely increased. Also, chemical extraction processing using soybean oil was developed to increase the stability of astaxanthin extracts. Through this developed ionic liquid assisted sequential extraction, astaxanthin recoveries were 74 %, 62 %, and 56 % for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th extraction process respectively with re-use of solvent. |
