The semi-IPN membranes comprising a proton conductor and a methanol barrier were prepared for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). As the proton conductor, acrylate-terminated fully sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) oligomers (acPAES-100) with tetrabutylammonium ion were synthesized. Meanwhile, as the methanol barrier, poly(ether sulfone) copolymers (RH-2000, Solvay) were used. In the blend system, the introduction of acPAES-100 with low molecular weight and low hydrophilicity made it possible to form the boundary of phase separation at the low concentration of the solvent in the phase diagram and to restrict the phase separation of semi-IPN membranes. By changing the drying conditions and conducting the UV-curing process, the phase separation was deliberately controlled. The effect of phase separation on the morphology development of semi-IPN membranes was examined and based on this observation, the transport properties were systematically correlated with the morphological change. |
