Traditional single-phase electrolytes, which are widely used in state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries, cannot simultaneously fulfill the various electrochemical requirements of anodes and cathodes. Here, we demonstrate a new class of thermodynamically immiscible, heterojunctioned dual-phase gel electrolytes (HD-GEs) and explore their potential application to Li-S batteries. Two immiscible GEs, which consist of liquid electrolytes (EMS and Glyme), alumina nanoparticles, and crosslinked polymer skeletons, are heterojunctioned in series by an UV curing-assisted process. The EMS-GE layer of the HD-GE is oriented toward the sulfur cathodes to facilitate sulfur utilization, while the Glyme-GE layer, which faces the lithium anodes, prevents the migration of dissolved polysulfides. Driven by this electrode-customized multifunctionality, this HD-GE provides exceptional cell performance that lies far beyond those accessible with conventional Li-S battery electrolytes. |
