3D Hierarchical Mesoporous TiO2 Electrodes for Dye-sensitized Solar Cells |

We investigate the three dimensional hierarchical mesoporous TiO2 electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells. The mesoporous TiO2 electrodes were produced from sacrificial meso-scale polymer (40-80 nm in diameter) crystals in the macroporous TiO2 inverse opal structure. The layer thickness and size of mesopores were optimized for enhancement of photovoltaic properties. The characteristics of electron transport were also investigated using an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The maximum conversion efficiency was observed at an electrode thickness of 12 μm due to the competing effects of charge recombination and dye adsorption. The electrodes of smaller mesopores performed the higher photocurrent density because of the high specific area and low electron transport resistance at the TiO2 electrodes/dye interface. We achieved a maximum conversion efficiency of 6.90% using an electrode 12 μm thick and a mesopore diameter of 35 nm. |
