Synthesis of silica/polypyrrole core/shell nanoparticles using surface modified silica and their electrorheological response |

We report on the synthesis and electrorheological (ER) chracteristics of silica/polypyrrole (PPy) core-shell nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were prepared by the surface modification of monodisperse silica particles using a 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (MPS) as a modified agent to improve its surface activity in order to make more stable core-shell particles. Polypyrrole shell was then coated on surface of silica. Scannig electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images corroborate obvious evidence of the morphology and structure of the particles. ER chracteristics of these obtained nanoparticles dispersed in silicone oil were examined via a controlled shear rate test using a rotational rheometer. The resulting flow responses show that the ER fluid composed of silica/PPy particles exhibits typical ER behavior under diverse electric field strengths. |
