The polyaniline/poly(styrene sulfonate) (PANI/PSS)-coated silica spheres are fabricated via a facile seed-coating method without surfactant or stabilizer. The electrorheological (ER) properties of PANI/PSS-coated silica spheres based fluid are examined as a function of the particle size under an applied electric field. Interestingly, performances of the ER fluids are enhanced with decreasing the particle diameter because the smaller particle has higher mobility. From an in-depth insight into the influence of particle size on ER activity, it is confirmed that the size effect can play a key role in improving the ER performance. Furthermore, the fibrillation phenomenon and sedimentation property are also investigated. |
