In this study, the correlation between the porosity and electrorheological (ER) performance of materials are investigated. Specifically, silica (SiO2) materials with different pore sizes of 1, 2, and 10 nm are fabricated via modified Stober method. Homogeneously prepared silica materials are dispersed in silicone oil to formulated ER fluids. Accordingly, SiO2 with 10 nm pores showed 3-fold higher ER performance compared to SiO2 with no pores, such phenomenon is owing to the increased dielectric property. Larger pore volumes increased the charge accumulation ability of materials under applied electric (E) field. This study successfully revealed the correlation between porosity of material and ER performance. |
