A copper nanoparticle has been recognized as a promising CO2RR electrochemical catalyst. However, some critical problems like high overpotential, low single product F.E block copper being marketable CO2RR catalyst. For solving that problem, palladium was alloyed to copper nanoparticles by the colloidal synthetic method. Optimized composition (1:1 Cu-Pd ratio) of palladium in Cu-Pd alloy show impressive catalytic activity (87% CO F.E at -0.9V vs RHE), and it also showed the high mass activity of palladium (47 mA cm-2 at -0.9V vs RHE). From DFT calculation, it seems that alloyed palladium block copper catalyzes CO* intermediate to hydrocarbons by increasing CO* protonation energy barrier. It suggests that alloying trace amount of noble metal to copper can enhance CO2RR catalytic activity dramatically. |
