Orange is one of the most cultivated fruits in the world. Orange peels contains cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin, which are attracting attention as raw materials for biorefinery. The aim of this study is to improve the enzymatic digestibility (ED) of orange peels by optimization of pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. The optimum conditions for pretreatment were as follows: solid loading of 60.1 g/L, alkali concentration of 3% KOH and reaction time of 30 min. Under the optimum conditions, the predicted glucan content (GC) and ED were estimated to be 32.3% and 86.0%, respectively, the experimental GC and ED were achieved 32.8% and 87.8%, respectively. The optimum conditions for the enzymatic hydrolysis were determined as follows: enzyme complex loading of 30-unit cellulase (FPU), 15-unit cellobiase (CBU) and 30-unit xylanase (XNU) per g biomass and a reaction time of 48 h at 50°C. Finally, under the optimized process, the ED was improved by 3.7 times compared to the control group. |
