Ethylene-modified latexes were prepared by the emulsion polymerization ofstyrene using poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA), [Mn: 18, 800, acid number: 140],as a polymeric emulsifier. The effects of the concentration of EAA, the degree ofneutralization of EAA on the latex particle size and distribution were investigated.EAA containing 20% portion of acrylic acid could form aggregates like micellesand the solubilization ability of the aggregates were dependent on theelectrolyte concentration above 100% degree of neutralization of EAA. Thepolystyrene (PS) latexes prepared using EAA showed the small particle size andmonodispersed particle size distribution in the presence of excess neutralizing agent. This could be explained by the fact that the size of aggregates in the aqueoussolution was smaller because electrolytes reduce the electrostatic repulsion betweencharges along the EAA chains. The miscibility between EAA and PS improvedduring emulsion polymerization using EAA as a polymeric emulsifier. The EAAimproved the barrier properties and chemical resistance of ethylene-modifiedpoly(n-butyl methacrylate) [PBMA] films.
