Intra-gallery polymerization is effective for inducing exfoliated structure of clay platelets into polymer matrix than extra-gallery polymerization due to its chemical effect. In this study, bifunctional intercalation agent, 2-(methylacryloyloxy)ethyl(4-benzoylbenzyl)dimethyl ammonium bromide (MDAB), was successfully synthesized and used for clay modification by cationic exchange reaction. MDAB plays a great role as a photo-initiator as well as a reactive clay modifier for intra-gallery polymerization. After polymer/clay coating layer was cured by UV irradiation, clay tactoids were fully exfoliated and well dispersed in composite layer. These results show that photochemical initiation of MDAB occurs in the intra-gallery. Barrier property of composite layer on plastic substrate was enhanced maintaining optical property by using MDAB-modified clay. MDAB induced intra-gallery polymerization in clay platelets, which increase the tortuous path of water vapor in the composite layer. |
