제목 Controlling the Cell Size of Polymerized High Internal Phase Emulsions by Changing the Viscosity Ratio Between Two Phases
초록
Open microcellular foams prepared by the high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) polymerization of mixtures mainly composed of styrene monomer and water show highly porous characteristics with regular, spherical and isotropic structure. Due to these advantages overshadowing other materials, a number of applications can be created such as polymeric membranes, ion exchange resin, controlled release systems, absorbents and inertial confinement fusion targets. The success in these applications strongly depends on the microcellular structure having large surface area, i.e., small cell size. The cell size can be controlled by changing the agitation speed, the surfactant concentration and the composition of the oil phase during the emulsion preparation. One of the simplest methods to get smaller cell size is to impose higher agitation speed during the emulsion preparation. Another way to attempt is to change the viscosity of continuous phase, which might affect the cell size depending on the viscosity ratio of dispersed to continuous phases. In this study, an introduction of high molecular weight polybutadiene and polystyrene to the oil phase is attempted to reduce the cell size with comparable properties to unmodified countpart. A correlation for the cell size is in accordance with the hydrodynamic analysis.
