Microalgae have various advantages including the treatment of waste and wastewater. In the algal cultivation, it was utilized as carbon and nutrient sources. However, the consumption pattern of nutrients in the waste and wastewater may vary depending on the condition of seed culture. In this study, we tested the effect of the condition of seed culture on the cell growth and substrate uptake profiles. Two types of seed cultures, phototrophic and mixotrophic seed cultures were prepared and the main cultivation was started with the same number (same dry cell weight) of initial cell density. We could find that cells adapted well in the mixotrophic condition showed decent uptake of sugars and it brought better cell growth than the cultivation using seed culture made under the phototrophic condition. We believed that this research would be a helpful item to prepare large scale cultivation. |
