Parametric Impedance Analysis of Layered Oxide Cathode Materials Combined with GITT |

The application of the impedance spectroscopy has been rather limited in the electrochemical characterization of battery materials in that often only a few selected states of charge are examined and also mostly high frequency responses for the charge transfer resistances are monitored. We combined impedance measurements over a wide frequency range at each equilibrium state of charge with galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) in the characterization of the state-of-the-art cathode material LiCoO2 and the lithium-excess layered oxide 0.3Li2MnO3∙0.7Li[Ni0.5Co0.2Mn0.3]O2. Parametric analysis has been performed using equivalent circuits of hierarchical transmission line models. A macroscopic one dimensional transmission line model for the electrode geometry constituting the framework has the overall reaction impedance which includes the solid state diffusion and insertion reaction in the cathode material of the spherical geometry as well as the charge transfer and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) impedances. |
