One–step Synthesis of Furan Dicarboxylates from Galactaric Acid |

Furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is one of most essential targets for bio-refinery as it replaces terephthalic acid in the production of polyesters. Furan dicarboxylates might be easier to manage during the purification process than furan dicarboxylic acid and they can be converted easily to furan dicarboxylic acid. In this research furan dicarboxylates were synthesized using one step from galactaric acid and several primary alcohols were tested to achieve the best synthetic route. Sulfuric acid, p-toluensulfonic acid, and heteropoly acids were tested as catalyst for this reaction, achieving important yields for the main compounds. The evolution of the reaction with the time was checked and the compounds that appeared along the reaction and purification process were analyzed. |
